One of the things that might be part of your second half success
plan.is a side gig, or trying to launch a business or kick off something to bring in some extra income. But at the same time that you're doing that, you also have a full time job that you're holding down. So one of the challenges you might be facing is how do you make the transition from what you do on your day job, eight hours, nine hours a day to to spending the few hours that you need to spend on some evenings on your other projects. How do you make that transition?
BREAK PHYSICALLY AWAY FROM YOUR DAY WORK
Before COVID, many of us probably had jobs that required us to go into the office. You went into the office four, five days a week, and then you had a commute. You had a natural built in buffer in terms of travel time, between your day job.
And there's a lot of things you can do with that time. You can listen to some podcasts. You can read some books. You could do some things to turn off your mind from one thing and turn on your mind towards the other thing,
When you're at home, you don't have this automatic natural break to your day that's brought on by the travel time from one location to another. It's just not there. If there's any travel time for me right now, it's from my desk going around the corner to the kitchen or some other room in the house. One of the things you can do is go outside and take a walk. 10, 15, 20 minutes, just to decrease the volume of one thing, allow the brain to settle down brainwaves that were dedicated to the day job.
REVISIT YOUR VISION
But let's say you do that. Now you have to get yourself up and energized to dedicate some hours to your side hustle. So one of the things you can do is revisit your vision for why you are engaging this activity. What's the why behind the what?
You are the chief reminding officer. You have to remember for yourself, remind yourself why you're doing this. So if you've got it written down someplace of where you wanna be in five, 10 years, and this endeavor is gonna help you get there, read it. Read it out loud so that you can hear yourself, say the words, think the things, feel the feelings, experience the sensations and let that add some fuel to the actions that you need to take to engage in the activities for the side gig or whatever the effort is.
GET PAST THE INITIAL RESISTANCE.
A lot of times it's just that initial resistance. There's a wonderful book that talks about resistance called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It's a wonderful book. It literally talks about the fact that resistance is a thing that we are just not willing to confront that resistance. And if you can push through that, things tends to smooth out after that, and then you start to get into a flow state a little bit and then you can sort of push it on through the end.
So tell yourself, "Okay, I'm gonna go and do this for five minutes." Whatever that thing is. And what you're hoping is that is that you might forget to stop. Once you get past the five minutes, you'll forget that you were supposed to only do this for five minutes. And next thing you know, you look up and you've been doing this for 45 minutes or an hour, and you've got all these things taken care of because you got through that initial resistance.
